Blackfish (Amazon Prime)
Blackfish is a critically acclaimed documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite, released in 2013. The film primarily focuses on killer whales and Tilikum’s (an orca) captivity at SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida.
Through a combination of interviews, archival footage, and investigative reporting, “Blackfish” exposes the reality of these majestic beings. It also explores the ethical and safety concerns associated with keeping these intelligent marine mammals in captivity for entertainment purposes.
The documentary highlights the tragic consequences of captivity for both orcas and their trainers. Particularly in the case of Tilikum, who was involved in several fatal incidents.

I Could Never Go Vegan
I Could Never Go Vegan is a documentary by Thomas Pickering – An individual who was raised vegan. Now, he’s on a mission to explore why it is that people “feel” the need to eat animals.
Furthermore, the film takes a unique approach to Veganism by addressing common misconceptions and concerns about animal protein. Most of which many people have when it comes to adopting a vegan lifestyle.
In this film, interviews take place with individuals from various backgrounds and lifestyles. They discuss their initial doubts, personal journeys, and the challenges they faced before making the transition. As well as the positive health changes they experienced.
The documentary also incorporates the culinary aspects of veganism including flavorful, delicious, and satisfying plant-based recipes.

The documentary (and book), Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones explores the concept of Blue Zones and the secrets to living a long, healthy life.
Blue Zones are regions around the world where people tend to live longer and have lower rates of chronic diseases.
The term was coined by National Geographic and Journalist Dan Buettner who researched and identified these areas. He is also the author of the book and narrator of the film.
The documentary investigates several Blue Zones, including regions in Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California.
It dives into the lifestyle, diet, social connections, and cultural practices of the people in these areas. Specifically to uncover the “secret” to their longevity and vibrant lives.
Live to 100: Secrets of the Blue Zones provides valuable insights into living a longer and healthier life. All while emphasizing the importance of holistic well-being, lifestyle choices, and community connections.

SLAY is a 2022 documentary film that investigates the use of animal skins in the fashion industry. The film was directed by Rebecca Cappelli, the producer of the award-winning documentaries Cowspiracy and What the Health.
The film documents Cappelli’s journey as she travels the world to interview fashion designers, animal activists, and scientists. Discussions held revolve around the impact the fur, leather, and wool industries have on animals, people, and the planet.

This investigative documentary uncovers the most destructive industry facing the planet today. All while investigating why the world’s leading environmental organizations are too afraid to talk about it.
There were some pretty shocking finds in this film and a scene that even shocked Kip himself unexpectedly. You’ll have to watch it to see what happens!
Cowspiracy presents a compelling argument about the livestock and agricultural industry. It reveals it to be a leading cause of deforestation, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and habitat destruction.
It also asserts that the consumption of animal products contributes significantly to climate change. Questioning why major environmental and governmental organizations tend to avoid addressing this issue.
While the documentary has faced criticism and controversies, it has played a significant role in raising awareness. It sheds light on the connection between diet and environmental sustainability and inspires you to reconsider your food choices.

What the Health (Netflix)
What the Health is a documentary film released in 2017, directed by Kip Andersen and Keegan Kuhn. The same duo behind Cowspiracy.
Like their previous work, What the Health tackles the subject of diet and its impact. But with a particular focus on the health implications of consuming animal products.
I loved this film because it reveals the truth behind health organizations including the pharmaceutical industry.
It also sheds light on the corruption in government and big businesses behind rising healthcare costs and illness. You’ll be surprised at what you learn in this one.
Especially, if you want to know where your money is truly going. You’ll learn what’s really going on behind the scenes of the organizations you support and donate to.
Furthermore, the film exposes the healthcare industry for what it is. Additionally, it examines the link between diet and chronic diseases. Including heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
This is not to say that all medical practitioners are the same. However, it does bring light to the bulk of the so-called “health” industry.
Since the release of the film, the documentary has generated significant attention. So much that it has inspired many people to go vegan after watching it.

Forks Over Knives was one of the first vegan documentaries I watched and is still one of my favorites. I can’t recommend it enough.
Live and Let Live (Amazon Prime)
Live and Let Live is a German documentary film directed by Marc Pierschel. The film examines the relationship between humans and animals and explores the reasons why people choose to live a vegan lifestyle. As well as the ethical, environmental, and health reasons that inspire people to go vegan.
From butcher to vegan chef, from factory farmer to farm sanctuary owner – Live and Let Live tells the stories of six individuals who decided to stop consuming animal products for different reasons. It also shows the impact the decision of these individuals has had on their lives.
Food scandals, climate change, diseases, and ethical concerns are moving more and more people to reconsider eating animals. And leaning more toward a plant-based way of living.
It’s an inspiration to see how those who would never have thought it to be possible, transform their entire lives. Live and Let Live is a definite must-watch!
PlantPure Nation (YouTube)
PlantPure Nation is an American documentary film about the health benefits of a whole food, plant-based diet. The film follows three people on a mission to demonstrate the power of a plant-based diet.
The documentary begins by examining the groundbreaking research conducted by Dr. T. Colin Campbell. A renowned nutritional scientist and author of the bestselling book, “The China Study.”
Dr. Campbell’s research has shown that a plant-based diet can be highly effective in preventing and reversing chronic diseases. Including heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer.

The documentary What You Eat Matters aka The H.O.P.E. Project, explores the connection between our diet, our health, and the planet. It also features leading experts including Dr. T. Colin Campbell, Caldwell B. Esselstyn, and Vandana Shiva.
The film argues that the Standard American Diet is a major contributor to chronic diseases. It also argues the devastating impact our diet has on the environment. This includes its contribution to deforestation, climate change, and water pollution.
What You Eat Matters offers a solution to these problems. Which is simply to switch to a whole food, plant-based diet.
This documentary is a powerful and informative call to action. It’s a must-watch for health improvement, reducing the impact on the environment, and creating a more sustainable future.
The Dominion documentary exposes the brutal and inhumane treatment of animals across various industries. Particularly in factory farming, animal agriculture, and animal testing. Including the dairy industry.
This film is a follow-up to the 2014 documentary “Lucent,” which focuses on the Australian pig farming industry.
Dominion has some powerful and graphic scenes but it is also greatly important to watch. It provides a firsthand look at what really happens to animals behind closed doors. While exposing the harsh reality of how animals are raised, exploited, and slaughtered for food consumption.
Including the use of animals in research laboratories, the treatment of animals in the fur industry, and the exploitation of animals for entertainment purposes.
All this is backed up by undercover footage and interviews with experts, activists, and whistleblowers that expose
the animal suffering in these industries.
The intention of this film is to raise awareness of the cruelty that animals endure at the hands of human beings. And, hopefully, inspire you to make more compassionate choices.
Earthlings is an influential and powerful documentary about the cruel treatment of animals in various industries. Including factory farming, pet breeding, entertainment, and scientific research.
The film is directed by Shaun Monson and narrated by actor Joaquin Phoenix. It also features music by Moby.
The Earthlings documentary relays a very powerful message. One that sheds light on the way humans exploit and mistreat animals. Not just for food, but for clothing, research, and entertainment purposes.
Film footage includes undercover investigations and hidden camera recordings. All of which reveal the suffering and cruelty inflicted upon animals across these industries.
While this film is graphic and disturbing, it’s important to watch as it exposes the harsh realities of the treatment of animals.

Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead is a documentary about an overweight, chronically ill Australian man, Joe Cross. Joe embarks on a life-changing journey to regain his health through juicing and a plant-based diet while sharing it with the world.
Narrated and directed by Joe Cross himself, Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead is a truly inspiring film. One that shows how possible it is to turn your health and life around with will and determination.
The film begins with Joe deciding to take control of his health after being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease. As well as reaching a state of obesity that left him feeling energy drained and chronically fatigued.

Peaceable Kingdom is a groundbreaking documentary that explores the lives and personal transformations of several individuals. These people come from backgrounds in the animal agriculture industry but later chose to become advocates for animal welfare.
Among these people are farmers and farmworkers who had previously raised and cared for animals on factory farms. Eventually, they all experienced an ethical awakening and made a compassionate connection.
And as a result, it led them to leave the industry and turn toward animal rights activism.
Peaceable Kingdom introduces you to the animals themselves. This allows you to see cows, pigs, chickens, and other farm animals as individuals with unique personalities and emotions.
The documentary aims to challenge societal norms and perceptions about farmed animals. All while highlighting their capacity to experience joy, suffering, and emotional bonds.
Peaceable Kingdom ultimately conveys a message of hope and transformation. Illustrating how people from diverse backgrounds can make profound changes in their lives. As well as work towards a more compassionate world for animals.
If you want an enlightening kind of film filled with hope and possibilities, this is a great one to watch.
I wasn’t always vegan but have been an animal lover all my life. Being “animal people” is something many claim to be.
However, despite being an animal lover, I still ate red meat, chicken, and seafood. I used products that were not cruelty-free and was among the many that supported a cruel, money-hungry, inhumane industry. Without even realizing it.
When I look back over the years, I stop and wonder, how in the world did I not make the connection sooner?
So when I embarked on this journey to live a healthier lifestyle, I began to learn more about veganism, the environment, and sustainability. Through documentaries, videos, articles, books, and social media.
As I learned more about the hidden truth, it quickly took me from just living a healthy lifestyle to supporting animal rights as well. Eventually, it also became about sustainability and doing right by our planet, Earth. It’s all interconnected.
You see, it all begins with knowledge and the willingness to learn more so that we can evolve into better humans.
We have the power of choice to live consciously, explore, and truly educate ourselves on all that is happening around the world. After all, it affects our health (we owe it to ourselves!), our planet, and above all, innocent, living beings.
Specifically farmed animals who have had their rights and lives stripped away in the most unconscionable way.
Knowledge is power my friend, but not unless we are open to absorbing it and implementing it. Take these documentaries and explore them. Open your mind.
But most importantly, never stop learning and educating yourself. For that is the foundation of a life transformed.
