If you’re looking to transition into eco yoga sustainable organic clothing, you have come to the right place. I began my own transition a few years ago when I learned the level of toxicity that runs through the supply chain in the fashion industry.

Between the negative environmental impact derived from the use of synthetic fabrics and toxic chemicals to the effects on our skin, there is no better time than the present to shift toward sustainable fashion.

The time for positive change is now. And what better way than to start with what is already in your closet?

Start with bringing harmony to your yoga practice by feeling great in your new sustainable yoga clothing. It’s similar to the food you eat. What you put in your body, clean or toxic, affects you as a whole – mind, body, and spirit.

When you wear clean, organic yoga clothes made with breathable, sustainable materials, your skin feels healthier and less prone to rashing or heating up from sweat buildup. Plus, you’re able to maximize your practice comfortably.

What Is Eco Yoga Clothing?

Eco yoga clothing is yoga wear made from eco-friendly materials such as low-impact dyes, natural fibers, organic cotton, plant-based materials, and plastic-free packaging to help reduce their carbon footprint.

The production of eco and ethical yoga clothing also includes fair trade certification and practices which helps enforce child labor laws, fair wages, and safe working conditions for production workers.

But do your research though, because not all are sustainable brands that use eco-friendly fabrics. Some will use marketing tactics and “trickery” to attract the consumer into buying, yet still use synthetic fabrics and toxic dyes in their products.

The good news is, you can rest assured that the sustainable yoga brands I’ve listed below are both ethical and eco-friendly.

Benefits of Yoga Apparel Made From Sustainable Materials

Yoga clothing made from sustainable materials not only benefits the planet and our environment, it also benefits those wearing them.

Here are 5 reasons how:

Eco-friendly: Sustainable yoga apparel is typically made from organic or recycled materials, such as organic cotton, bamboo, or recycled polyester.

By choosing brands that offer products derived from these materials, you help reduce the demand for harmful chemicals, excessive water usage, and energy consumption associated with conventional textile production.

Ultimately, helping to lower environmental pollution and promoting a more sustainable fashion industry.

Non-toxic and Hypoallergenic: Yoga clothing made from sustainable materials is less likely to contain harmful chemicals, pesticides, and synthetic dyes.

As a result, it helps reduce the risk of skin irritation, allergies, or even yeast infections that may arise during yoga practice when working up a good sweat. Wearing non-toxic, hypoallergenic, sustainable yoga clothes allows for more comfortable movement and practice, especially for individuals with sensitive skin.

Breathability and Comfort: Sustainable fabrics are more breathable, lightweight, and moisture-wicking than clothing made from synthetic fibers and toxic materials. The breathability and comfort allow for better airflow and ventilation while keeping you cool and dry throughout your workouts.

Durability and Longevity: Yoga apparel made from sustainable materials are more durable, last longer, and are made of higher quality. In turn, saving you more money in the long run.

Ethical and Socially Responsible: Sustainable yoga apparel is typically produced under fair trade conditions, ensuring that workers involved in the manufacturing process receive fair wages and work in safe environments. By supporting brands that prioritize ethical practices, you help put an end to the unethical, fast fashion industry.

The Difference Between Organic Cotton & Recycled Materials in Yoga Clothes

The difference between organic cotton and recycled materials in yoga clothes is that organic cotton is grown free and clear of toxic chemicals such as fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. It uses fewer resources and less energy than regular cotton.

Recycled materials such as polyester, on the other hand, are repurposed from used plastic bottles pulled from waste that would have otherwise ended up in a landfill. This process uses less energy and water than conventional polyester.

Negative Environmental Impacts of Synthetic Fabrics

Something we don’t often think about is how synthetic fabrics negatively impact the environment. The synthetic fibers in our clothing pose a great risk to our waterways and marine life and are a major contributor to micro plastics.

If you don’t know what micro plastics are, they are invisible microfibers in synthetic clothes made from polyester and acrylic. When washed, the fibers are released from the clothes and in turn, end up in our waterways which results in the polluting of our oceans as well as our ecosystems which we need to greatly protect.

Now, more than ever.

Toxic dyes and chemicals are also contributors to our land and ocean pollution. They also affect our skin and those who work in production factories. We don’t realize this, but what goes into the production of our clothes, is just as important as what goes into our bodies.

True Story

I have a friend who works in a toxic chemical environment that has been fighting with the coming and going of cancer because of the toxic chemicals she has to breathe in when in the workplace. The chemicals and dyes can also be absorbed by our skin, making their way into our bloodstream while affecting both our health and the environment.

Natural fibers like conventional cotton can also be an issue due to the amount of water used during production.

The best thing we can do is make conscious decisions when buying our clothes. Think of it as an investment. So the next time you shop for yoga clothing, be sure to go through quality brands that create and craft clothes from high-quality, eco-friendly materials that are made to last.

And don’t forget that taking care of your clothes also goes hand in hand. Using eco-friendly detergents like Earth Breeze or Dropps is a shift in the right direction! I use both of these brands and I absolutely love them.

Natural Materials & Plant-Based Fabrics

Plant-based fabrics are becoming widely popular and with good reason. For starters, they are vegan and cruelty-free! With plant-based options like bamboo, hemp, and cupro (fabric made from cotton waste) on the rise, it’s easy to find something you like.

These are great alternatives to synthetic fabrics. You can’t go wrong with either one.

However, keep in mind that because flexibility and moisture absorbency is required during yoga practice and other high-performance activities, brands will use a combination of natural fibers such as organic cotton with synthetic fibers to create the final product – inclusive of spandex and elastane.

Are Traditional Yoga Mats Sustainable?

Traditional yoga mats are not sustainable or eco-friendly. In fact, most yoga mats are generally made with the use of toxic chemicals and PVC (polyvinyl chloride) – a toxic plastic that is not only harmful to the environment but also to our health.

These toxic chemicals can in turn be potentially absorbed through your skin when sweating during yoga or exercise. So it’s something to seriously take into consideration if you are an active yogi.

Furthermore, most mats are also not recycled so when thrown out, they end up in landfills and add to the already polluted air we breathe.

What are Sustainable Yoga Mats Made From?

Depending on the brand, sustainable mats can be out of cork, natural rubber, recycled water bottles, jute (produced from flowering plants), and sometimes recycled wetsuits. Far way better for the environment than the average yoga mat.

Sustainable yoga mats are not only eco-friendly, but they also sustain the length of time and will have you resting blissfully in savasana!

Why Should I Buy Organic Yoga Matting?

Organic yoga matting is a far better option than the traditional kind. For the reason that natural, organic materials are more absorbent and breathable. Natural, organic mats are also ideal when doing hot yoga to help ease into each pose without losing your grip or slipping around as you sweat and drip on the mat.

Plus, it doesn’t leave your mat a sweaty mess to wipe down.

Is It Okay To Use A Non-Natural Rubber For Your Eco Yogi Mat?

Yoga mats designed with non-natural rubber (NBR or synthetic) are considered harmful to the environment due to the toxic chemicals used in the making of them. These heavy toxic chemicals are predominently derived from petroleum.

100% natural rubber yoga mats are made from rubber plants or rubber trees and are a much better alternative for your health and the environment. However, some may contain natural latex which can cause allergies for some.

Feel good about the purchases you make and know that in supporting sustainable clothing brands, you are doing right by the environment.
