Juicer Buying Guide

Choosing the right juicer that fits you and your lifestyle can be overwhelming. Which is why I created this guide to help alleviate the stress and remove the guesswork so you can be on your way to buying the juicer that works best for you.

The more you find yourself learning what living a healthier lifestyle truly entails, you become more inclined to make positive, healthy changes in your life that will improve your overall health and wellness dramatically.

A part of these changes begins in your kitchen.  For starters, it includes removing old kitchen appliances and making room for the new.  Because juicing is one of the most common ways to begin detoxing and nourishing your body, buying the right juicer is important in your progress.

One of the most common questions I get from those who are ready to begin their wellness journey is, “What type of juicer do you recommend?” Which is why I have put together this article to help you get started.

There are several types of juicers.  I will break down the two most common types to help you in making your decision.

Here are two main types of juicers: 

  • Centrifugal juicer (with blade – fast)
  • Masticating juicer (cold-pressed – slow)

Centrifugal Juicers

Centrifugal are the most popular type of juicers because of their capability to juice fast. It’s their biggest selling point. If you’re looking to make a juice in a shorter amount of time, without as much prep time, then centrifugal juicers are a good option. They speed up the process, and depending on the type of juicer, can also clean easy too.

These types of juicers work by using a centrifugal force that draws out the produce’s juice. The spinning motion much like that of a washing machine separates the juice from the pulp.

The produce is forced down a feed tube before they meet a serrated cutting blade that spins at around 12,000 RPM.  The shredded pulp goes into a basket, while the juice goes into a separate container.


  • They juice fast so they are ideal for busy people
  • Space saving smaller models
  • Do not require the pre-cutting of produce so they save time on prep work
  • You can just push whole fruits through the feed tube without having to chop them into smaller pieces



  • The blade on these juicers produce a great amount of heat in turn reducing the nutritional value of the juice which defeats the purpose of juicing
  • Not the best choice for leafy greens as they will extract less juice than masticating juicers
  • Lower juice yield
  • Can be challenging to clean depending on the model
  • Oxidization
  • Very noisy models

Masticating Juicers

Masticating or cold-pressed juicers do not shred produce with blades, but instead use a slow rotating auger to crush produce against a stainless steel mesh screen at only 80 to 100 rpm, creating no oxidation and maximizing nutritional value.

With slow, cold-pressed juicers, you get a higher yielding juice.


  • Ideal for leafy greens and can juice wheatgrass
  • High juice yield
  • No oxidation
  • Many models can also make nut butters and even sorbet
  • Some models are easier to clean than others


  • More prep work due to a smaller feed chute
  • More costly than centrifugal models
  • Take more time to extract juice as they are slower than centrifugal juicers
  • Some are larger in size but can also be found in upright smaller versions
  • Leaves more pulp in the juice, so may require a strainer (depending on your needs, this may be a pro)

Juicer Shopping Considerations

Good, lasting juicers do not come cheap.

When you consider your purchase, think about this… is juicing just going to be a luxury in your life, or is it going to become a crucial, even a necessary part of your new lifestyle? Will you juice everyday or every month?

If juicing is going to be a fundamental part of your life, then it is smart to invest in the best juicer you can afford.  If, however, you’re only going to be juicing every now and then, then consider starting off with a less expensive model that will do the job.

Easy to Use and Clean 

This maybe one of your most important considerations because if you have a busy life, spending 15-20 minutes chopping and prepping ingredients and another 10-15 minutes on cleaning will be a hassle. In this case, choose a juicer with a big feed chute, as this will require little or no chopping of produce.

There are powerful juicers … And then there are REALLY powerful juicers.

There are the colossal juicers and there are smaller juicers. The bigger models will be very big and powerful, and may not be ideal for novices or even younger family members like teenagers.

If you’re just starting out in juicing, consider this in your shopping. If you have a large household, you may want a much larger model that can make more juice for lots of people, versus a one or two-person household where a smaller model is ideal.

You should also bear in mind that the bigger the juicer is, the harder it’s going to be to clean and store.

My personal opinion…

I prefer to use a cold-pressed juicer for optimal juice yielding and nutrition.

The difference in prepping requires a little bit more time because you have to cut the some veggies a bit smaller than you would with a centrifugal juicer. However, it’s not that big of a difference.

As far as cleaning goes, using a cold-pressed horizontal juicer will save you lots of time. Coming from an upright juicer which was supposedly easier to clean, then, going to an Omega, I found that with my Omega juicer, the cleaning is actually MUCH easier and faster to achieve. 

Using a horizontal, cold-pressed juicer versus a vertical one, saves a lot more time and makes me want to juice more than when I had a vertical, centrifugal juicer.

Omega is middle of the road, nothing fancy or top of the line but nothing cheap either. I’ve had my juicer for over 5 years now and it still functions at its best.

This is one I would HIGHLY recommend for cost and efficiency.
