Just because it’s the holidays, it doesn’t mean you can’t keep it healthy. There are a ton of ingredient swaps you can substitute in your dishes that will still taste good but at the same time are easier on your body and lighter on the guilt! And trust me, no one will even notice!
6 commonly used ingredients you can easily substitute
Bleached Flour – It wasn’t long ago when there were only a few flour replacements but now, you can find a whole new variety lining the baking aisle shelves that give you a bunch of options to choose from. You won’t be able to tell the difference!
- Oat Flour
- Buckwheat Flour
- Cassava Flour (Gluten-Free)
- Almond Flour (Gluten-Free)
- Garbanzo Bean Flour (AKA Chickpea Flour)
- Quinoa Flour (Gluten-Free)
- Cashew Flour (Gluten-Free)
- Coconut Flour (This one is more like a cornstarch type of flour and used for thickening and works great if you slip on the water!)
Eggs – Eggs can easily be substituted in a recipe. Simply by combining 1 tablespoon of ground flaxseeds with 3 tablespoons of water (preferably distilled water).
You can also replace egg with:
- 100% unsweetened Applesauce (use ¼ cup to replace 1 egg)
- Banana (use 1 ripe mashed banana to replace 1 egg)
** Banana must be fully ripe with speckles **
Sugar – With all the yummy, healthier options available now, there is no need to continue using the JUNK sugar. There are way better options than this JUNK!
Butter – There are many great tasting plant-based butter alternatives you can use in your recipes that are much healthier than the typical cholesterol loaded butters. Why opt for unhealthy when you can get the same use out of a healthier version and not even taste it? I’ve got some suggestions for you! 😉
- Coconut Oil
- Earth Balance
- Vegan Ghee
- Country Crock Plant-Based Butter
- Califia Farms Plant Butter (found at Target)
- Pure Blends Avocado Oil Spread (found at Target)
- Miyokos Cultured Butter (a couple of varieties found at Target)
Milk – Milk is such an easy substitute. There is no need to use milk when you have a large variety of nuts available to make your own milk. I made a quick and easy cashew milk in my chocolate smoothie recipe video which you can watch down below.
And I didn’t even use a nut bag! Just the cashews, water and a fine mesh strainer. So easy!
If you don’t want to make your own milk, you can easily pick one up at Whole Foods using Amazon Prime. Just click on the drop down menu in the search field and select Whole Foods Market to start shopping! Nut milks are everywhere and more so now, on the rise but beware because not all nut milk is created equal.
- Almond Milk
- Cashew Milk
- Oat Milk
- Coconut Milk
If you really want to keep it healthy and eliminate as many ingredients as you can without having to make it yourself, I would highly recommend the Three Trees Organics brand. They make a vanilla almond, unsweetened almond, black sesame and pistachio. Three Trees nut milk can be found at The Fresh Market and most health food stores or you can go to their website to locate a store near you.
All of them taste delicious and make a perfect healthy alternative to making your own. I actually made a video review on these which you can find down below.
Chocolate – If you’re a chocolate lover like I am, you may tend to include chocolate in most of your baking recipes like I do. So you can imagine how excited I was to learn that chocolate truly is healthy. The “dark” kind that is which is what has always been my fave! Except, not in the packaged chocolate you find on the sweet shelf. The higher the percentage of dark chocolate the better.
The dark chocolate is cacao which comes directly from the source – the cacao bean. Don’t confuse this with cocoa. Cocoa is highly refined, made with dairy and high in JUNK sugar. Cacao has more of a bitter taste but combined in your smoothies or baking dishes, they are perfect!
- Cacao Nibs
- ENJOY Mega Chunk Chocolate Chips (the next best thing if you want more of a “chocolate chip” alternative)
Swap cocoa powder with:
- Cacao Powder
Sending you love, light and a stress-free holiday season!
